Could President Trump’s Next Announcement Send Markets Into Chaos? Here’s Why I Don’t Stress.
When Washington goes noisy, it’s tempting to place a “big idea” trade on the news. I’m not doing that today.
The government shutdown is front-page, but as I said live on Opening Playbook this morning, it’s a nothing burger for my trading right now.
Could it matter later? Sure. Will I try to predict how long it lasts and build a trade around the prediction? No. That’s not a repeatable edge… that’s a guess.
Here’s how I handle days like this.
First, I separate headlines from setups. Headlines are loud. Good setups are clear.
If a structure already had favorable odds before the news, I’ll still consider it. If a structure only makes sense because I think I can forecast how Congress behaves next week, I pass.
I want trades that don’t require me to be a political handicapping expert.
Second, I keep risk defined and small. My preferred approach is to use positions where the worst-case is known up front.
If price wanders while the headlines churn, I can hold that structure without stress. If price moves, I have a path to get paid without having nailed the direction because of the headline.
Third, I let process do the heavy lifting.
My edge comes from rules — entry criteria, time windows, exits I can live with — not from being the first person to react to a breaking alert.
If the shutdown truly starts to change the data that feeds my process — earnings, margins, credit spreads, volatility regime — then I’ll adapt. Until then, I’ll trade what’s in front of me and size so that a quiet outcome is acceptable.
If you’ve been itching to “trade the shutdown,” remember: markets can shrug off dramatic stories for longer than you expect.
You don’t need to predict the next press conference to participate intelligently. Stick to structures that work whether the headline fizzles or runs hot. That’s how I keep my capital aligned with what matters — and avoid turning a news cycle into a self-inflicted drawdown.
