>>>The game plan for Power Hour at 1:30 PM ET: We’re staying bullish heading into next week and dip-buyers haven’t gone anywhere. Let’s look ahead and also look back at what worked this week and more!<<<

Retail names lit up the tape as multiple stocks this week posted sharp gains, fueled by short squeezes and sector-wide momentum. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Pop Mart (OTC: PMRTY) and other specialty retailers surged as traders piled into call options, targeting continued upside.

Short Interest Turns into Fuel

The most explosive moves came in names with high short interest. When heavily shorted stocks start climbing, short sellers are forced to buy shares to cover their positions. That buying pressure adds to the rally, creating a feedback loop that can send prices sharply higher in a short period of time.

Abercrombie’s spike fits that pattern.

The stock moved aggressively as momentum buyers joined the squeeze, driving intraday gains in the high single digits. Pop Mart also saw outsized action, with traders noting options volume spiking alongside share price. These surges are classic squeeze setups — quick, aggressive and often detached from fundamentals.

Flow and Sector Momentum

Options flow showed bullish positioning in multiple retail names, a sign that traders were betting on a broader sector move rather than isolated wins. This can happen when an earnings beat or positive guidance from one retailer sparks buying across the group, pulling up peers in sympathy.

The retail sector can be particularly sensitive to these chain reactions. Strong results from one brand can shift sentiment on consumer spending overall, leading to a wave of buying in other names. When options traders see that kind of momentum, they often target short-dated calls to maximize leverage on a fast move.

In this case, the surge across ANF, PMRTY and other retailers suggests a mix of short covering and speculative buying. While the upside can be dramatic, these moves can also reverse just as quickly once the squeeze runs its course or if sector sentiment shifts.

For traders, the setup highlights why monitoring short interest and options flow together can provide a big edge. A sudden spike in call buying on a heavily shorted stock — especially when it’s part of a broader sector rally — can be the first sign of a spike turning into a short squeeze!

Order Flow:

When you look at these plays, always take the market maker move into consideration.

You can be right on the direction but still lose money if the stock doesn’t move enough. That’s where the market maker move comes in clutch.

With puts, they’re often downside hedges in case a stock tanks, especially around earnings. The further out of the money they are, the more likely they are to be hedges.

Also be sure and check when the company’s earnings date is because many of the plays we post here are centered around earnings!

And finally, always remember the golden rule when it comes to buying calls: Buy dips, sell rips — and don’t chase!

If a stock’s moved a ton already today, maybe wait for a pullback.
