Something’s been on my mind lately, and I’ve been asked about it a lot…

Lance, why have you started trading spreads so much when you used to hate them?

And that’s correct, I used to go with nothing but the big swings. The thrill trades. The ones that could pop 400%, 800%, maybe more if everything lined up perfectly. And yeah, I’ve closed more than my fair share of massive winners.

Those wins feel incredible in the moment.

But here’s what I’ve learned as I’ve gotten a little older and maybe a little wiser — consistency is what I really aim for now. I know that’s not as sexy. It doesn’t get your heart racing like a potential 10-bagger.

But having a full trading toolkit is what actually builds wealth long term. And that includes things like trading simple spreads and going for credit.

Traditional trading strategies can be unreliable sometimes, even when everything looks right. You can have a chart that looks absolutely perfect.

Volume surging. Momentum through the roof. And a straight call option can still go against you. If you’ve been trading for more than five minutes, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Starting Small Beats Starting Over

I see traders in my community doing all kinds of different things with their accounts. Some folks are swinging big size, which is great if that works for your situation.

But you don’t have to start big — start small, like aiming for a couple hundred bucks a week with a smaller account.

Toss the ego aside.

I’ll be honest — I still love the excitement and the thrill of big directional trades. That rush doesn’t completely go away. But I’m getting more conservative with my money, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Turns out, I actually enjoy stacking base hits on top of base hits in addition to swinging for the fences when I get the right pitch.

Our success shouldn’t be 100% dependent on the market ripping higher every single day.

Finding success in the stock market is not about closing a few big trades every week. It’s about stacking consistent wins, managing risk and playing a game you can actually win over and over again.

That’s how you build a complete portfolio and arsenal of different strategies you can break out in different conditions.
